Coming soon to Leeds... a month of talks, film nights, nights out and other fun things all themed around Africa and the challenges facing the continent.
Get in touch if you want to contribute!
There are billions of people in the world who are not living their lives healthily for many reasons. Many diseases and illnesses threaten the livelihoods of all of us; HIV/AID, heart disease, TB, mental illnesses, cancers....
Some of us are fortunate to live in countries where healthcare is provided for free, where the water is clean, where we can see a doctor if we want to... but what if you're homeless on the streets of Leeds?
Others live in countries where they don't have clean water, where there are no doctors or nurses to give out medicines, or the medicines are too expensive. Perhaps there are no medicines to begin with.
Maybe the country is in war, where women are being raped like in Darfur, children recruted as soldiers like in Uganda, forcing many to flee, to become asylum seekers here in the UK.
So there's aid. But is it enough? Is it being used for the right things? Are we building their hospitals, but poaching their doctors? Are we giving expensive medicines, only to forget to teach them to wash their hands, and for them to succumb to diarrhoea?
And how will climate change affect health in the future? Will we be able to grow enough food to feed the world? Will malaria spread to Europe?
We are here to teach each other about these global health issues, to meet others who think the same, to share ideas, and to actually do something about all these important issues through our Projects and Campaigns, and to help make us into better doctors.
Take a look at our Vision.
Medsin Leeds holds many events thoughout the year, that aim to raise awareness about global health issues. From talks from people who have worked overseas, to experts based in the UK, and students who want to share their experiences. There are nights out where we raise money to help our Campaigns and Projects, meet others who are interested in the same things, and get to know each other!
Through our Projects, students get together and make a difference in Leeds. Through our Campaigns, students make lasting change happen.
StopAIDS is an example of a Campaign that organises fundraising events, letter writing campaigns, and who cart off students to London to talk to MPs about what the UK government can do to help those with HIV/AIDS in other countries.
Sexpression is an example of a Project which recruits students to teach at schools around Leeds about sexual health, which provides excellent experience for students and at the same time, helping to make a long lastng difference to adolescents in Leeds.
